The Format

Everyone signs up as an individual. Each Wednesday, teams are generated from checked-in players so you'll play with and against different people over the season. All skill levels are welcome.

The format is called "Level Up." Teams start each night at Level 1. Win a game and your team levels up, picking up a tougher handicap. The better you do, the harder it gets, which keeps matches competitive.

Level 1 is intentionally social. Light icebreaker handicaps help new teammates learn names, communicate faster, and get comfortable playing together right away.

Each season runs 7 regular-season nights over 7 weeks, plus 1 playoff night. Top teams advance to a single-elimination championship bracket with handicaps removed.

Play runs for about 2 hours each night. Come late or leave early, no problem. On-time check-in helps us place you in the first wave of balanced teams.

What to Expect When You Show Up

1

Check in by 6:30 PM

Show up and get marked present in the system. This is how we know who's playing and can build balanced teams. Checking in on time gives you the best chance to be in the first wave of games.

2

Teams and schedules are generated around 6:40

Balanced teams are built fresh each week based on who showed up. You'll get your team assignment and a full schedule of pool play games - usually around 4, sometimes more depending on turnout.

3

Play your games

Your team starts at Level 1. Win and you level up, gaining a handicap for your next game. Lose and you stay at your current level. Games are played to 21, rally scoring.

4

Hang out

Grab a drink, meet new people, stick around after games. It's a social league - the volleyball is just the excuse to get together.

Sample Restrictions by Level

1

Level 1: Standard Play

Standard play with social icebreaker handicaps designed to help teammates connect quickly (learning names, high-fives, extra communication cues).

2

Level 2: Mild Restrictions

Mild restrictions like "all sets must be bump sets" or calling "mine" before touches.

3

Level 3: Moderate Restrictions

Moderate restrictions such as "only female players can attack" or opposing teams selecting defensive assignments.

4

Level 4: Tough Restrictions

Tough restrictions including underhand serves or no blocking at the net.

5

Level 5: Extreme Restrictions

Extreme restrictions like prohibiting jumping or limiting touches to one per possession.

These are examples. Handicaps rotate weekly to keep things fresh.

Baseline Rules (All Levels)

  • Disputes resolved by replaying points

Why This Format Works

Variety

Random handicaps and rotating teammates keep every week fresh and unpredictable.

Social

Prevents cliques. You'll play with and against everyone by the end of the season. Level 1 social handicaps help break the ice fast.

Self-Balancing

Stronger teams are handicapped as they win, and teams are generated from check-ins to keep games balanced and competitive.

Skill Building

Tests fundamental skills when standard techniques become unavailable.
